NOT MORE PREP. A BETTER WAY INTO IT.

Same curriculum. Different execution.

01 / THE STARTING POINT

They know the material.
Then the pressure shows up.

Sometimes the challenge isn’t what a student knows. It’s being ready to use it in the moment.

Moving too fast

Rushing past details instead of giving a question the attention it needs.

Reading. Rereading.

Losing the thread, drifting off, and going back to the same line again.

Stuck between two

Second-guessing choices and struggling to commit to a response.

One mistake lingers

Letting a difficult question carry over into the next one.

Too much at once

Feeling overwhelmed before breaking a complex problem into steps.

A slow start

Taking time to get going—or to get back into it after a break.

A SMALL, INTENTIONAL SHIFT

Before the next question,
come back to this moment.

Upland’s guided audios are designed to reduce anxiety and increase focus through a simple, repeatable warm-up.

When students feel afraid or anxious, worry can compete for attention and make it harder to hold information in mind, follow instructions, and work through a question. Anxiety does not make learning impossible, and students do not have to feel perfectly calm to begin.

  • 01

    Take a breath

Use breathing to ease the rush before getting started.

  • 02

    Find an anchor

Bring attention to something simple, like hands resting on the desk.

  • 03

    Practice one response

Work on one controlled-response skill, one session at a time.

02 / HOW IT WORKS

A warm-up, not
another thing to schedule.

Plan a 5–7 minute warm-up within your tutoring session, then move into academic work. Agree on timing, participation, and equipment with your team.

01

Sit down. Settle in.

The student sits with their tutor, ready for their regular session.

02

Open. Press play.

The tutor opens Upland on any device. Warm-ups run in order, one per session.

03

A moment to prepare.

While the student listens, the tutor finalizes the plan and materials.

04

Right into the work.

When the audio ends, tutoring begins immediately. Same session, a more intentional start.

BEHIND UPLAND

A thoughtful start.
A shared future.

“I created Upland because I needed this support as a student: not just help with learning, but help navigating the stress that came with it.

Our children will shape our future. Helping them understand their stress responses and meet pressure with greater steadiness is about more than academic success. It is about giving them tools to care for themselves and one another—the foundation of a stronger, more compassionate society.”

03 / GOOD QUESTIONS

A little clarity
before you begin.

What evidence supports this approach?

Stress and anxiety can interfere with attention and working memory, but students can learn while feeling anxious. Upland offers a structured preparation routine designed to reduce anxiety and increase focus. These are intended benefits, not established product-specific outcomes or guarantees. Upland is not mental health treatment.

Background reading: research on stress and cognitive function. This research does not establish Upland’s effectiveness.

What is an academic warm-up?

A 5–7 minute guided audio designed to help a student prepare for the work ahead. It combines breathing, an attention anchor, and one simple controlled-response skill before tutoring begins.

Does this take time away from tutoring?

Upland is intended to replace the usual settle-in time, not add a separate session. The tutor can finalize their plan and materials while the student listens, then start tutoring immediately afterward.

Do tutors need special training?

The playback routine is simple: open Upland on a compatible device and press play. Teams should still agree on timing, participation, and equipment before beginning.

Is this therapy or a religious practice?

No. Upland is academic performance preparation. It uses simple breathing, attention, and response practices in the context of ACT and SAT tutoring. It is not mental health treatment.

Does Upland guarantee higher test scores?

No. Upland is designed to support focus and reduce anxiety before academic work; this is not a guarantee of score improvement. It complements tutoring rather than replacing instruction or practice.

Can I listen to a warm-up here?

Yes. Listen to the full guided warm-up using the player near the top of this page. It runs for about 5 minutes 46 seconds and only plays when you press play. A transcript is not yet available.
